This beautifully bound hardback book, published to coincide with Fears’ 175th Anniversary, charts the history of the company from its founding in Bristol in 1846 by Edwin Fear, through to its closure in the late 70’s, and its subsequent re-founding in 2016 by one of Edwin’s 6th generation descendants, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill.

It is a detailed history not only of Britain's oldest watch company, but also of a family business that persevered through numerous world catastrophes such as two world wars and the great depression.

The book has a chapter devoted to each of the four managing directors who have been at the helm of the company over the years and contains numerous full colour photographs and illustrations from the Fears archive, of both watches and artefacts, along with maps of the former locations and the logos used by the company in each era.

AUTHOR

The Bristol-based author, Jane Duffus, is three-times great-niece of Edwin Fear. She has written a book that is consistently engaging and illuminating, and which is the result of over two years of research, which has unearthed many new facts about the company, previously thought lost. Her numerous interviews included members of the Fear family as well as one of the final watchmakers to work for the company in its first incarnation. Jane is author of numerous books, including two volumes of the popular “The Women Who Built Bristol” series.

FOREWORD

The foreword has been written by Roger Smith OBE, who is widely regarded to be one of the finest watchmaker in the world, hand-crafting watches of exquisite beauty and complexity. He is also the co-founding Chairman of the Alliance of British Watch and Clockmakers, of which Fears is one of the founding members.
