Brunswick Brown Dial Watch

Year produced: 2021
Numbers produced: 5

Hand built in Britain in a limited run of only five watches, to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the original founding of the company in 1846.

Graceful and complex, like the other members of the Brunswick family, this is an exacting object to create. It takes its inspiration from a gentleman’s cushion case watch in the Fears archives, first made in 1924.

CASE

The Brunswick’s elegant 38mm cushion-shaped case has only one flat surface - the rear sapphire glass. Its glancing curves are machined from 316L stainless steel in Germany, to a level usually reserved for precious metals. The depth of the polish belies the sophistication of the machinery and the skill of the operator.

The Brunswick is manually wound each day using a traditional ‘onion’-shaped winding crown. Made in Switzerland, the crown’s grooves catch the light, adding a touch of radiance to the edge of the case.

On the solid caseback of the Brunswick Brown is our 175th Anniversary logo, laser engraved to give it a three-dimensional look with a brown hue complimenting the dial on the other side. Also engraved is the edition number, identifying each watch as part of this limited run.

DIAL

The Brunswick Brown features a Burnt Ochre dial that undergoes an extraordinary 59 production processes to achieve its multi-tone colour, which we call Burnt Ochre.

Part of this involves the dial receiving a galvanic coating of Rhodium, followed by a clear lacquer featuring pigment with a bespoke shade of brown. Along with the hand-brushed ring where the numerals sit, these combine to give the effect of an almost wood-like finish.

The numerals and alternate dots, which are applied to the dial by hand, are machined from brass and mirror polished before being hand painted in cream enamel, reminiscent of a 1930s British range cooker. The result is a smooth yet bold juxtaposition with the dial tone.

HANDS

The Brunswick Brown’s distinctive ‘Fears’-shaped hands are finished by a watchmaker, giving them a depth and detail not found in mass-produced, stamped watch hands. Each set of hands is subtly skeletonised before being polished to a mirror shine and painted in the same cream enamel to match the numerals.

Fears is one of only a handful of British watch brands that construct watch hands in-house, in the UK.

MOVEMENT

The Brunswick is powered by a Swiss made, manual winding ETA 7001 movement. This accurate movement was first designed in the 1970s, and its reliability has ensured its continuing popularity today. We service and finish each movement in Britain, with Côtes de Genève striping and Rhodium plating. Once the movement has been re-assembled and thoroughly tested, it receives Fears’ ‘Golden Pipette’, which is handmade and applied to the bridge.

STRAP

The Brunswick Brown comes with three straps, each of which gives the watch a different and distinctive look.

  • Bund strap: having its origins in military aviation, this style of strap features an extra band of leather between the watch case and the skin. This strap is handmade in Belgium from European Buffalo nubuck, giving a soft texture, and is a rich, chocolate brown, with a contrasting ivory stitch; these two colours match the dial, numerals, and hands, bringing them out. The strap is lined in Fears Blue Alcantara and has a Fears pipette laser engraved on the buckle.
  • NATO strap: made of Nylon, in a seatbelt weave, this strap has a smooth, comfortable finish, and a tone of brown that complements the dial beautifully, along with brushed stainless steel hardware.
  • Classic strap: the watch also comes with one of our Mink Brown straps. Handmade in Belgium out of supple goat’s leather from the Madras region of India, it has a subtle grain and warm colour.

With quick release spring bars, these straps, along with all the others in our range, can easily be interchanged, without tools.

Shorter Strap? We are able to supply the watch with shorter versions of the straps instead, simply contact us after having made your purchase to let us know and we’ll ensure shorter versions of the straps are included with the watch.

INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED

Each watch we make carries a unique serial number. Engraved between the 20mm lugs at 12 o’clock, this number helps us identify your watch and its history.

These watches also have an edition number, engraved on the caseback, which identifies them as one of a limited production run of just five watches.

BRITISH BOX

For decades Fears presented watches in a dark blue box with a cream-coloured lining. We are delighted to continue this tradition today.

The Brunswick Blue is presented in a bespoke wooden box, crafted in Britain from English Ash, which is stained Fears Blue. Lined in genuine cream suede, the watch sits proudly on a special cushion. With minimal branding, the outside of the lid reveals a hidden map of Brunswick Square when held in a certain light.
